How Many Square Feet Are in an Acre? 43,560 Explained

One acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. That is how much square footage is in an acre, whether the lot is a square, a long strip or an odd shape: the number describes area, not form.

This guide shows the conversion both ways, what an acre looks like on the ground and how to turn your own lot into acres.

How do you convert acres to square feet?

Multiply acres by 43,560 to get square feet. Divide square feet by 43,560 to get acres.

square feet = acres × 43,560
acres = square feet ÷ 43,560

The acre is fixed by definition. NIST Handbook 44 lists it as 43,560 square feet, which equals 4,046.8564224 square meters. In other units, one acre is 4,840 square yards (43,560 ÷ 9). So 2 acres is 87,120 sq ft, 5 acres is 217,800 sq ft and a quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft.

What does an acre look like?

If an acre were a perfect square, each side would be the square root of 43,560, which is 208.71 ft (about 208 ft 8½ in). An acre can also be a narrow strip: 66 ft × 660 ft is 43,560 sq ft as well. Any frontage and depth whose product is 43,560 gives one acre, for example 200 ft wide by 217.8 ft deep.

Both shapes are exactly one acre, drawn to the same scale.

How do you turn your lot into acres?

  1. Measure the width and depth of the lot in feet. Use decimals, so 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft.
  2. Multiply them to get square feet.
  3. Divide by 43,560.

Example 1. A lot 100 ft wide and 150 ft deep: 100 × 150 = 15,000 sq ft. 15,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.3444 acre.

Example 2. A lot 75 ft by 120 ft: 75 × 120 = 9,000 sq ft. 9,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.2066 acre.

Working backward. A quarter-acre lot is 10,890 sq ft. If it is 90 ft wide, the depth is 10,890 ÷ 90 = 121 ft. For the size of the house that might sit on a lot, the average square footage of a house guide gives U.S. Census figures.

For an irregular lot, split it into rectangles and triangles, find each area and add them. The method is in how to calculate square feet. Divide the total by 43,560 at the end, not for each piece, so rounding errors do not pile up.

The square footage calculator sums rectangles, triangles and circles, takes feet and inches, and shows the total in square feet, square yards, square meters and acres.

Acre-sized material math

Per-acre figures help when you compare bulk loads. Volume is area times depth, and one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet.

  • One acre covered 1 inch deep: 43,560 × (1 ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 134.44 cubic yards.
  • One acre covered 3 inches deep: 43,560 × (3 ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 403.33 cubic yards.
  • A quarter acre covered 3 inches deep: 10,890 × (3 ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 100.83 cubic yards.

For smaller beds, work in square feet and use the bags-per-yard guide for mulch. For the cubic-feet side of the conversion, see how many cubic feet are in a cubic yard.

Accuracy notes and limits

  • Foot definition. The 43,560 figure uses the international foot (exactly 0.3048 m). The older U.S. survey foot is about 2 parts per million longer, which changes one acre by roughly 0.17 sq ft. That matters for legal descriptions and none at all for ordering material.
  • Plan area, not ground surface. An acre on a map is measured flat. A sloped surface has more actual ground area than its map area.
  • Deeds and surveys win. A tape-measured sketch of an odd lot is an estimate. For a legal acreage, use the recorded survey or plat.
  • Usable is less than total. Setbacks, easements and slope are not part of this arithmetic. Check them with your local planning office.

Questions people ask

What is the square footage of 2 acres or 5 acres?

Two acres is 2 × 43,560 = 87,120 sq ft, and five acres is 5 × 43,560 = 217,800 sq ft. Ten acres is 435,600 sq ft.

How many square feet are in a quarter-acre lot?

43,560 ÷ 4 = 10,890 sq ft. A quarter-acre lot that is 90 ft wide is 121 ft deep (10,890 ÷ 90).

How many square yards are in an acre?

4,840. Divide 43,560 square feet by 9, because a square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet.

Is a 100 ft by 100 ft lot an acre?

No. 100 × 100 = 10,000 sq ft, which is 10,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.2296 acre, a little under a quarter acre. The square footage calculator totals a lot of any shape.

Is an acre the same size everywhere in the United States?

For almost every purpose, yes: 43,560 sq ft, based on the international foot. The older US survey foot changes one acre by roughly 0.17 sq ft, which matters for legal descriptions and not for ordering material.
