How Many Shingles Are in a Bundle? Bundles per Square and Coverage

In Owens Corning’s product guide, a 3-bundle architectural line works out to about 21 shingles per bundle and a 3-tab line to about 27, and a bundle covers roughly 33 square feet.

How many shingles in a bundle depends on the product. What matters more for ordering is bundles per square: most lines are sold 3 bundles to the square (100 sq ft of roof), but some use 4 or 5. Read the wrapper before you buy.

How many shingles are in a bundle, by product?

Manufacturers publish bundles per square and coverage per square for each line. The table uses the Owens Corning product guide. Shingles per bundle and coverage per bundle are our division of those published figures. Other brands publish their own numbers, so do not assume one brand’s counts apply to another.

Per-bundle counts are averages from the per-square counts, and the wrapper is the final word. Weight per bundle also varies by product and is printed on the wrapper. Do not guess it from another line.

How many bundles of shingles per square?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof. Bundles per square tell you how many bundles lay one square. The table shows why the generic rule of 3 is only a starting point: the Duration Premium family is 4 per square, and Berkshire is 5. Coverage per square can be a little under 100 sq ft. Owens Corning lists 98.4 sq ft for Duration at a 5-5/8 in exposure (the part of each shingle left visible) and a full 100 sq ft for its 12 × 36 in 3-tab at a 5 in exposure.

To size a roof in squares first, see how to calculate roof square footage. The pitch behind that math is in how to calculate roof pitch.

How many bundles do I need?

bundles = ceil( squares × (1 + waste) × bundles per square )
bundles = ceil( roof area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per bundle )

Use the first line for a quick count and the second when the label gives coverage per bundle. Both include the waste allowance. Take the larger result.

Example. The roof from the roof-area guide is 1,341.64 sq ft (13.416 squares). With 10% waste, that is 14.758 squares, or 1,475.80 sq ft.

  • Any 3-per-square line: 14.758 × 3 = 44.27, so 45 bundles. By coverage with 32.8 sq ft per bundle: 1,475.80 ÷ 32.8 = 44.99, also 45.
  • 4-per-square line (Duration Premium): 14.758 × 4 = 59.03, so 60 bundles. By coverage at 24.6 sq ft: 59.99, also 60.
  • 5-per-square line (Berkshire): 14.758 × 5 = 73.79, so 74 bundles. By coverage at 19.9 sq ft: 1,475.80 ÷ 19.9 = 74.16, so 75.

The Berkshire case shows why to run both formulas and take the larger count. The 3-per-square Duration coverage count (44.99) also sits just under 45, so a slightly larger roof would tip to 46. Use 10% waste for a simple gable roof and about 15% for hips, valleys and dormers. These are conventions, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your product.

What other bundles do you need besides shingles?

Field shingles are only part of the order. Starter strip and hip and ridge caps are separate products, sold by length per bundle or carton. Owens Corning lists these examples:

  • Starter strip: 100 linear ft per bundle.
  • DecoRidge hip and ridge: 20 linear ft per carton.
  • ProEdge hip and ridge: 33 linear ft per bundle.

For the example roof, a 40 ft ridge with a 5% allowance for cuts is 40 × 1.05 ÷ 20 = 2.1, so 3 cartons of DecoRidge. Two 40 ft eaves are 80 ft, so 1 bundle of starter. Underlayment, drip edge and nails are separate lines again.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming 3 bundles per square. Check the product. A 4 or 5 per square line changes the order by a third or more.
  • Comparing bundles between brands. One brand’s bundle is not another’s. Compare coverage per square.
  • Rounding before waste. Apply the allowance first, then round up.
  • Ordering the exact count. Add the waste for your roof shape, and keep a spare bundle for repairs if the color is discontinued.

Questions people ask

How many shingles are in a square?

It depends on the product. The Owens Corning product guide lists 64 for TruDefinition Duration, 80 for the 12 × 36 in Supreme 3-tab, 65 for the metric-size 3-tab and 45 for Berkshire.

How many squares of shingles do I need?

Divide the roof area by 100, then add waste. A 1,341.64 sq ft roof is 13.42 squares, or 14.76 squares with 10% waste, which is 45 bundles at 3 bundles per square.

How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 1,000 sq ft roof?

1,000 sq ft of roof is 10 squares, or 11 with 10% waste. That is 33 bundles at 3 per square, 44 at 4 per square and 55 at 5 per square.

How many bundles of ridge cap do I need?

Ridge cap is sold by length. For a 40 ft ridge with a 5% allowance, 40 × 1.05 ÷ 20 ft per carton = 2.1, so 3 cartons of DecoRidge (Owens Corning). Check the length per bundle on your product.

Is a bundle the same size for every brand?

No. In the Owens Corning guide a Duration bundle covers about 32.8 sq ft and a Berkshire bundle about 19.9 sq ft. Compare coverage per square, not bundles.
